Achieving in Year 11
Changes to GCSE grading (Update: November 2016)
Please click on the image on the left to download The Bulwell Academy Bulletin - this is our new format for keeping parents up to date with important information.
The November bulletin informs parents about the changes to GCSE grading. Please take your time to read this in order to help you understand the grading on your child's report.
To help students to prepare for their summer exams, a series of mock exams are held in the Spring to help students experience the rigours of the exam room and to understand how much more work may need to take place to achieve the highest possible results.
Preparing for Exam Success
We know that supporting a student through the 'exam year' of year 11 can be quite challenging for many parents.
The Vice Principal for Year 11, Miss Stopard, has written a useful guide to help parents navigate the challenging months ahead with practical ideas to support revision techniques, managing exam stress and understanding some of the key dates that students need to prepare for (see Parent Guide on the right).
Please also view the helpful guide on "How to handle Exam stress" by clicking on the image on the left.
Preparing for Progression
Year 11 is also a time for further choices - whether to stay and study at the Academy's Sixth Form or whether to look for an apprenticeship or study elsewhere. This website has substantial information to inform these choices and we would encourage you to look at our Sixth Form offer and Options at 16+
Building on the work in year 10 to develop personal understanding on personal strengths and team working, the academy works alongside internationally-renowned 'youth motivator', Kevin Mincher. During the early days of Year 11, Kevin meets the students and shares techniques for enhancing memory and focusing on planning for the exams and year ahead. He makes a return visit later in the year to review progress and work more intensively on students' self belief. Whilst students are given their own personal log-on to a website which encapsulates this learning, parents are welcome to view the Unstoppable Teen website to gain a greater understanding of the work involved.
