the great big Dance Off - East Midlands regional finals, Monday 23 January 2017
Well done to our girls from Years 7 to 11 who took part in the East Midlands regional finals of a national schools dance competition at The Albert Hall, Nottingham. The girls did group dances, trios, duets and solos, and came in 8th place overall.
Back row (left to right): Megan Cooper (Y7), Abby Knighton (Y10), Jaden Marshall (Y10), Ruby Coxon (Y7), Tamzyn Holmes (Y7), Liva Narvida (Y11), Daria Skrzeczewska (Y11), Saskia Lynch (Y11), Tanayha Lopez (Y7), Kyzhjae Lightbourne (Y11), Nikki Rayner (Y8), Kiera-Mai Derrick (Y8), Chloe Collins (Y8)
Front row (left to right): Fern Hay (Y7), Isabelle Raynor (Y7), Charley-Mai Woodward-Bates (Y7), Kerry Puckerin-Tear (Y11)
The dancers were selected for the East Midlands heat after Head of Dance, Ms Oliver, submitted some video clips of the students - some of whom are BTEC dance students whilst others just like to dance as a hobby. Since being selected, all the girls have shown great commitment by attending after school dance sessions. Ms Oliver said, "The girls have been positively buzzing about the whole experience. The students were a credit to The Bulwell Academy throughout the event".
The competition was fierce and the dances produced across both key stage groups were of a very high standard. This didn’t put Bulwell Academy off - they battled in both categories to try and secure places in the Top 5 which would have seen them go on to the national finals.

Our Year 7 and 8 girls, who only began dancing in September as part of the after-school program, produced a mighty street dance piece with support from a few more experienced Year 9 dancers to help calm the nerves of the younger performers. We also had an outstanding dance solo from the very talented Megan Cooper in Year 7. Her routine showed elegance, attitude and grace placing her in 8th.
Our Year 10 girls, Jaden Marshall and Abby Knighton, performed a "street v lyrical dance" - they worked the stage and performed with passion and projection.
Our Year 11 BTEC Dance students produced some wonderful dance pieces. Tamyzn Holmes choreographed a salsa / street dance piece with lots of personal expression. Saskia Lynch, Liva Narvida and Daria Skrzeczewska were our final dancers of the competition - they secured our top mark of 80 out of 100, just missing out on 5th place, with their "line dancing v street dance" piece which went down a storm!
The Bulwell Academy were placed 8th overall.
Thank you to staff, Miss Jarvis and Mr Todhunter, for back stage organisational skills and to parents for their support at the event.
Bulwell Academy Dance produced some fantastic dance pieces to showcase at their very first Great Big Dance Off regional final, and we look forward to going back next year and putting on another Bulwell Academy Showcase.
